Reflection on Mark 10:17-31

Scripture
Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible but not with God; all things are possible with God”

Observation
A rich young man comes to Jesus, falls on his knees and asks him what he needs to do to be saved. Jesus tells him that he must obey the commandments. When the man says he has kept them all, Jesus says that he needs to sell everything, give the money to the poor and then come and follow Jesus. The man goes away sad because of his great wealth.

Jesus then tells his disciples that it is hard for rich people to enter the Kingdom. The disciples are amazed at this. They ask him who can then be saved. Jesus points out that is is not about our resources but about God's grace.

Application
Possessions can become blockages to salvation. Our dependence on things- cars, house, gadgets- can become a form of idolatry.

To follow Jesus we have to let go of our idols. Our idols are hard to see because our worship of them and our dependence of them are so deeply ingrained into our lives that we can't even see them.

What part of your life is Jesus not allowed to touch? What are the issues that make you squirm when the Holy Spirit whispers to you? What are the verses of Scripture that you don't like to read?

Prayer
Father I confess my idols to you. I repent of my worship of false gods. I ask you to show me what is really in my heart and help me to let go of everything that stops me from trusting in you alone. Amen.
