Three things will last forever- faith, hope and love- and the greatest of these is love.

Observation
Having the greatest, most spectacular spiritual gifts is nothing without love. Knowledge and prophecy, generosity and martyrdom- without love these things are nothing.

Spiritual gifts will pass away but love lasts forever. Love never gives up but endures every circumstance.

We only know a little now but when perfection comes love will be more important than knowledge.

Application
Paul is not criticising or downplaying spiritual gifts and spiritual knowledge. He is saying that without love these things are meaningless. It is love for God and love for our neighbours that give the context for spirituality.

You could know the whole bible in the original languages and still not be saved.

You could heal people in Jesus' name and not know Jesus.

The test of our relationship with God is the way we treat others.

Do I show love of to the people around me? Is the love of God evident in my daily walk?

Prayer
Lord make me a channel of your love. May others know that you love them because of my actions. Amen.
