So they pulled up their boats on shore, left everything and followed him.

Observation
One day Jesus is standing on the shore of the Lake of Genesaret and the people are crowding around him. In order to be heard, he gets into a fishing boat and asks Simon to push him out a little way.

After he finishes teaching, Jesus tells Simon to go to the deep water and put down the nets. Despite having no luck all night, Simon does what Jesus says and catches so many fish that he has to get the others to come and help.

Simon becomes aware that Jesus has been sent by God. Jesus calls Simon, James and John to come with him to fish for men.

Application
This fishing miracle convinces Simon that Jesus is in some way a holy man. He doesn't understand yet the full implications of this, but it is enough to convince him to leave his business to follow Jesus.

For Simon and his friends, following Jesus meant leaving everything behind and taking a risk, a gamble.

Like Simon, it takes us a while to discover what Jesus is really all about. While we may start off with a foot in the world and a foot on the cross, eventually we have to make the decision to give it all up- our whole life- for Jesus.

Today Lord I choose to walk in your ways, following your path. Help me to be faithful in this, risking all for you. Amen.
