Reflection on Luke 4:1-13

Scripture
When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.

Observation
Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, is led put into the wilderness where the devil comes and tempts him.

The first temptation is to turn stones into bread with which to feed himself. Then the devil offers Jesus all the kingdoms of the world in exchange for worshipping satan. Finally the devil takes Jesus to the highest point of the temple and tells him to prove his divinity by throwing himself off and having angels come to rescue him.

In each case, Jesus replies with scripture. Finally the devil leaves him until a more opportune time.

Application
The devil we are told in scripture roams around looking to devour people- even the Son of God. We need to be constantly alert.

Jesus used Scripture to counter satan's temptation. He knew the Word of God and how it should be interpreted. This was his weapon against temptation.

Jesus also knew his purpose. He knew what the Father had sent Him for. That certainty of direction meant that he was not able to be distracted.

Above all, he knew the Father. His relationship with the Father was so deep that nothing could come between them, not even the master tempter.

Prayer
Father help me to absorb your word, to know my purpose and above all to know you. Amen.
