Scripture
And Abram believed the Lord, and the Lord counted him as righteous because of his faith.
Observation
The Lord appears to Abram in a vision and assures him of His protection. Abram says to the Lord that he still has no son and therefore no heritage. But the Lord takes Abram outside, shows him the stars and says, “This is how many descendants you will have.”
Abram believes the Lord at this point, and is counted as righteous because of his faith.
Then the Lord enters into a solemn covenant with Abram passing between the two halves of a sacrificial offering. The Lord promises to give the land where they are a a gift to Abram's descendants
Application
Though far from perfect, Abram was a man of great faith. He believed in the promises of God and so the Lord counted him as righteous.
God promises the same accounting of righteousness to those of us who believe in Him and trust Him.
If I believe in my heart that Jesus died for my sins then that makes me righteous in God's eyes. I can still be far from perfect (in fact I will be that way all my life), but God says that doesn't matter because all of my sins are covered by the blood of Jesus.
In God's kingdom, just a little faith is enough to start the journey. He will see that we finish it safely.
Prayer
Lord help me to be like Abram and take your promises at face value. Amen.
