Scripture
A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.”
Observation
Jesus takes Peter, James and John up to a mountain to pray. As he is praying, Jesus' appearance changes, his clothes becoming as bright as lightning.
Moses and Elijah appear with him, also shining with glory. They discuss what Jesus is about to fulfil in Jerusalem.
Peter and his companions were sleepy, but they wake up when they see what is happening. In confusion, Peter wants to erect some shelters for Jesus, Moses and Elijah.
Then a cloud appears and surrounds them and a voice proclaims “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” Then Jesus is alone.
Application
The glory of Jesus is briefly made manifest and the disciples are overcome.
The veil of earthly normality lifts and they see Jesus as He really is.
The key to this is that they accepted Jesus' invitation to come aside and pray. They weren't expecting much, but the glory came.
If we really want to see the Kingdom and the King then we must respond to His call to come and pray. Spending time in the presence of God allows us to see things as they really are.
Prayer
Lord I confess that I am so weak at this business of spending time with you, in your presence. Please hep me to draw aside and see your glory. Amen.
