Reflection on 1 Corinthians 10:1-13

Scripture
The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand,

Observation
Paul reminds his readers about the idolatry of their ancestors in the wilderness. Even though they were guided by God himself in a cloud, had been miraculously brought through the sea and were fed every day by the provision of God, they still persisted in sin.

They worshipped idols, they were sexually immoral, they put Christ to the test and grumbled constantly. They were punished for these things as a warning to us to walk faithfully with Christ,

If we think we are doing well, we need to be careful lest we fall. Our temptations are no greater than anyone else and God will not allow us to be tempted beyond our ability to stand. He always provides a way out of temptation.

Application
We are having ourselves on if we think we are above sin and temptation. Every stage of maturity comes with its own temptations and unique sins. Sometimes it is hard to even recognise our idols as such until the Holy Spirit points them out to us.

The really Good News in this is that God gives us grace to withstand temptation. There is always a way through.

The trick is to focus on Jesus Christ and not on our sins and temptations. We move closer to what our eyes look at, so focus on Jesus not on the thing that entices.

Prayer
Lord Jesus help me to love you more dearly and follow you more nearly day by day. There are so many enticing temptations all around me. Hep me to keep my eyes firmly on you and my heart close to you. Amen.
