Reflection on Luke 19:28-40

Scripture
“Blessing on the king who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest heavens.”

Observation
Jesus sends his disciples ahead into the city of Jerusalem and tells them to find a donkey near the city gates. If asked, they are to say “The Lord needs it.”

They bring the colt, and Jesus rides it into the city. The crowds spread out their garments on the road ahead of him.

As he reaches the place where the road descends towards the city, all his followers shout and sing, praising God for all the things they have seen Jesus do.

Some Pharisees tell Jesus to order his disciples to be quiet. Jesus replies that if they kept quiet the stones beside the road would praise him.

Application
What an exciting event this must have been. Heady street theatre in which Jesus declares he is the King. This King comes in peace not war and conquers by love not force.

The disciples and others in the crowd praise Jesus willingly and joyfully. Whatever else might have been happening in their lives is put aside for a time of joyous praise and worship.

Prayer
Lord help me to worship you on every occasion, lifting up your name and praising you for your mighty deeds regardless of any anxiety or fear that I may feel. Amen.
