Scripture
Immediately he (Saul) began preaching in the synagogues about Jesus, saying, “He is indeed the Son of God!”
Observation
Saul, in his zeal to kill all of the followers of the Lord, asks the high priest for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, requesting help in arresting the followers of the Way.
On the way to Damascus, he sees a bright light from heaven and hears a voice saying, “Saul! Saul! Why are you persecuting me?” The people with him hear the voice but see no one. Saul is led to Damascus blinded by the experience.
The Lord speaks to a believer named Ananias, telling him to find Saul and lay hands on him. At first Ananias is reluctant but he goes anyway. He lays hands on Saul and Saul immediately sees, He begins preaching in the synagogues that Jesus is the Lord.
Application
Saul was blind long before he met Jesus on the way to Damascus. His pride and religious zeal left him unable to see that Jesus was the Messiah.
Ananias was a humble follower of Jesus called to do a simple but difficult thing- lay hands on the one who persecuted christians. This is “love your enemies” in a potent, personal form.
Sometimes God calls us to do things which seem incomprehensible and even impossible for us. When He does that we have to take that step of faith and trust that He knows what He is doing. You never know what miracles you may miss out on if you stay in the comfort zone.
Prayer
Lord, whether you call me to the safe and predictable or the wild and scary, pleace help me to be faithful to you in all things. Amen.
