Reflection on Acts 2:1-21

Scripture
Everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages as the Holy Spirit gave them the ability.

Observation
the disciples gather on the Day of Pentecost, and with great noise and signs of fire, the Holy Spirit comes upon them. They are all filled with the Holy Spirit and they all speak in tongues.

Jews from all over the world are in Jerusalem for the feast. As they hear the noise they crowd around the house and hear these ignorant Galileans praising God in their various languages.

Some think they are drunk, but Peter explains that this is the great fulfilment of Joel's prophecy. The Holy Spirit is poured out on all flesh and everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

Application
Pentecost is the most awesome event. The Holy Spirit, in former days, was given to meet a need- a prophet or a king might be filled with the Holy Spirit- but now the Spirit is poured out on all people.

The death and resurrection of Jesus releases the abundance of the Holy Spirit. Suddenly every follower of Jesus is able to minister in all the fullness of Christ Himself.

The gift of tongues comes as a sign of the presence of the Holy Spirit- a tangible sign and a heavenly prayer language.

Prayer
Fill me Holy Spirit! Baptise me Holy Spirit! Overwhelm me with the knowledge of the presence of God. Amen.
