Reflection on 1 Kings 19:1-15

Scripture
And a voice said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Observation
After the confrontation on Mount Carmel, Ahab goes back to tell Jezebel that Elijah has killed the prophets of Baal. She vows to kill Elijah, who flees for his life.

He heads into the wilderness and after praying to die, he goes to sleep under a broom tree. Twice an angel comes and provides bread and water.

Elijah travels to Mount Sinai where he shelters in a cave. The Lord says to Elijah, “What are you doing here?” The Lord passes by, and there is a great wind, followed by an earthquake and a fire. Then there is a sound of a gentle whisper.

The Lord sends Elijah back to continue his ministry.

Application
Elijah feels overwhelmed by the powers of darkness opposing him. It seems like even when he wins the power battles, it isn't enough. He just wants to give up and die.

God meets him in compassion and sends him out again, refreshed and renewed.

When we feel pulled down by the problems of life or the opposition of evil, God will meet us in compassion. He will enable us to trust in Him and to continue the journey He has called us to walk.

Prayer
Father please help me to keep my eyes on you, even when the world seems to be overcoming me. Amen.
