Reflection on 2 Kings2:1-14

Scripture
Elisha saw it and cried out, “My father! My father! I see the chariots and charioteers of Israel! And as they disappeared from sight, Elisha tore his clothes in grief.”

Observation
Elijah and Elisha know that Elijah is shortly to go to heaven. As they walk and pass through different towns, Elijah encourages Elisha to stay while Elijah moves on. Elisha insists on sticking close to Elijah.

In each place, the local prophetic school comes out and tells Elisha that his master is about to leave.

Finally they cross the Jordan on dry ground. Elisha asks Elijah for a double portion of the spirit on Elijah. Elijah replies that this is a hard thing but if he sees him being taken away then he will get his request.

Suddenly a chariot of fire takes Elijah away. Elisha is distressed, then takes up Elijah's cloak, strikes it on the river and crosses on dry ground.

Application
This is a story about spiritual fathers and inheritance. The double measure of the Spirit is a request for Elisha to become the heir of Elijah.

Elisha saw Elijah as his spiritual father, not as a master as the other prophets saw it. Because of this close, intimate relationship, Elisha is able to receive from Elijah the inheritance of Elijah's spirit, life, heart and gifting.

We need to willingly surrender our hearts to our leaders as spiritual sons and daughters to a spiritual father. This is the way true inheritance works.

Prayer
Lord help me to see those who are over me as fathers bringing love, grace and empowerment. Help me to give my heart to them. Amen.
