Reflection on Luke 10:38-42

Scripture
“Only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Observation
Jesus comes to a village where sisters Mary and Martha live. While May sits at Jesus' fit listening to the teaching, Martha is running around preparing a meal.

Martha becomes frustrated by Mary's lack of help. She asks Jesus to rebuke Mary, but Jesus says that Mary has chosen the more useful path.

Application
It is easy to get swamped by the demands of ministry and miss the bigger picture. We get overwhelmed by administration and cooking and organising and forget that in the end it's all about Jesus.

Some things are necessary, some things are helpful and some things just distract us. But Jesus is the most important one. We dare not take our eyes off Him- not even for the ministry.

Much of Jesus' teaching was about reminding people of just two things- love God and love your neighbour. We want to complicate things and spiritualise things, but Jesus simplifies.

Prayer
Lord, please help me to keep my eyes on you. Always. In my doing and serving, let me be focussed on you and on what you want. Amen,
