Scripture
Yet the Israelites will be like the sand on the seashore which cannot be measured or counted. In the place where it was said to them, “You are not my people,” they will be called “sons of the living God.”
Observation
At the beginning of his ministry, the Lord tells Hosea to marry an adulterous woman as a sign of Israel's adultery in departing from the ways of the Lord.
She has three children whom Hosea is instructed to call “Jezreel” -for the Lord will punish the house of Jehu king of Israel at Jezreel- “Not loved” and “Not my people”.
As these children are growing up as living signs of the judgement of God against His people, the word of grace also comes for God will once again make them prosperous and call them his own sons.
Application
This is a passage that contradicts those who would want to compartmentalise their family from their ministry. These children were the ministry. They carried the warnings of God in their daily lives.
I don't know whether these children experienced father wounds or low self-esteem because of their names. I do know that the Lord would have brought them comfort and encouragement despite their names.
At the end of this dismal passage of judgement comes hope of redemption. God is like that- He always brings hope for salvation even in the midst of judgement. God does not condemn in this life, but always offers us a way out.
Maybe you are feeling the burden of serving the Lord is particularly onerous at the moment. Maybe you carry a name that is a stigma or the cost to your family is particularly high. Be encouraged for when we serve God in God's way then there is a reward.
Prayer
Father you turn those who are called “Not loved” or “Not my children” into your sons and daughters. Help me to walk obediently to you today, no matter how high the cost seems. Amen.
