Reflection on Hebrews 12:18-29

Scripture
Since we are receiving a kingdom that is unshakable let us be thankful and please God by worshipping Him with holy fear and awe; for our God is a devouring fire.

Observation
Unlike the Israelite, in coming to Christ, we have not come to a physical place of fear of manifestations so overwhelming that they begged God to stop speaking.

Rather than the physical Mount Sinai we have come to a spiritual Mount Zion, the city of the living God. We have come to the assembly of God's children, to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant.

So we must be careful to listen to the Lord. We must not reject the One who speaks to us from heaven.

Application
The Israelites received a revelation of the might and power, the holiness and judgement of God. In Christ, we see that there is something more. The wrath of God is answered by the blood of Christ.

This is not to suggest that God has changed His mind about sin. He is still a consuming fire, angry at all sin.

But now, in Christ, we have the privilege of being made clean and holy, and able to approach God's throne without fear.

Let's not take this for granted, but rather listen carefully to the Holy Spirit, so that we live in joyful obedience and reverent worship.

Prayer
Father you are awesome in power and might. But in your grace you welcome me to live in fellowship with you. Thank you for this indescribable privilege. Amen.
