Reflection on 1 Timothy 6:6-19

Scripture
True godliness with contentment is itself great wealth.

Observation
Paul exhorts us to be content with what we have. If we have enough food and clothing we should be satisfied.

The love of money is the source of all kinds of evil, and rich people can fall into temptation and bondage because of it.

As a man of God, Timothy is to run away from all evil and pursue righteousness. “Hold tightly to the faith,” Paul urges.

At the right time Christ will be revealed from heaven, and we will be vindicated. In the meantime rich people must use their wealth to do good.

Application
Whether we have much or little, Christ must be our focus. Those who are poor should be content in their place, while those who are wealthy should use their money for godly purposes.

Money can be a snare for many people because it is so easy to turn money into an idol or a god which promises to look after our security and hedge against the future. But monetary wealth, despite its appeal, is not a true security at al. God is our only real protector and saviour.

Prayer
Lord, help me to use my possessions to your glory and to be content with what you provide. Amen.
