Scripture
“But Abraham said, 'If they won't listen to Moses and the prophets, they won't listen even if someone rises form the dead.'”
Observation
Jesus tells a parable about a rich man who lived in luxury and a poor beggar named Lazarus who sat at his gate. They both die and the poor man goes to heaven while the rich man goes to hell.
The rich man calls out to Abraham to send Lazarus to bring water to relieve his suffering. Abraham says that God has reversed their positions and no one can travel across the chasm between the two places.
The rich man then asks Abraham to send Lazarus to warn his brothers. Abraham replies that if they refuse to heed Moses and the prophets they will not listen even if someone comes back from the dead.
Application
This parable tells us many things about the life to come.
1. There is a judgement. The sinful, proud and arrogant face eternal torment while the godly and humble will have an eternal reward.
2. There is no escape across the chasm, no “Get out of hell free” card.
3. God's judgement is righteous and true. Note how the rich man continues in his arrogance and sense of entitlement even in the place of suffering.
4. No sign or revelation is big enough to convict some people of their sin.
Prayer
Thank you Lord for the gift of salvation in Jesus Christ. Amen.
