A New Aussie World Record

From the ABC:

Wool world record: 42kg fleece shorn off overgrown sheep in Canberra, RSPCA says

Updated 19 minutes ago

Wool shorn off an overgrown sheep found near Canberra yesterday has set a world record for the heaviest fleece removed in one shearing, the RSPCA says.

The sheep, found yesterday, underwent a risky shearing operation to remove 42.3 kilograms of wool.

It smashed the previous world record held by a sheep in New Zealand called Shrek, whose fleece weighed 27 kilograms.

This morning, a national shearing champion took on the challenge to clip the sheep, which wasrescued by RSPCA staff after being reported by a member of the public.

It was so woolly its life was at risk, as sheep can develop serious medical conditions if they are not regularly shorn.

Vets were worried the animal could go into shock during the shearing, so it was sedated during the process.

The RSPCA estimates the sheep, which could barely walk due to the mass of wool, had not been shorn in more than five years.

It took four-time Australian Shearing Championship winner Ian Elkins and four helpers 42 minutes to shear the sheep.

An average fleece that has not been shorn for 12 months weighs about 5 kilograms and takes three minutes to shear.

Mr Elkin said it was a difficult job.

“It was a challenge but the sheep was calm and the vets gave it a mild sedation before we started the shear,” he said.

“We started on the belly, just laid it on its back, kept it comfortable.

“There were parts of the sheep where we had to cut it in different layers because the problem for me shearing it was the weight of the fleece was pulling on the skin and we wanted to keep the skin cuts to a minimum.”

Sheep to be put up for adoption: RSPCA

With 35 years in the sheep shearing business, Mr Elkin said he had never seen anything like it.

“I’ve shorn a few sheep with two years’ worth of fleece unshorn, they would cut 10 or 12 kilos,” he said.

“Sheep are shorn every 12 months and an average weight would be 5 kilograms. For this to cut over 40 kilograms and smash the world record, Shrek the New Zealand sheep, he cut 27 kilograms, it’s unbelievable.”

One runaway Tasmanian sheep, known as Shaun, lived in the wild for six years and was found with fleece that weighed more than 20 kilograms.

Mr Elkin believes the fleece will not be sold.

“Because of the length of it, it’s 42 centimetres long. It will have no commercial value but it will be interesting to see what the RSPCA do with it, whether they put it in a museum or something like that,” he said.

RSPCA spokeswoman Jane Gregor said the animal was being checked by vets.

“Obviously it was a bit hard to check yesterday,” she said.

“Once everything’s fine we’ll put him up for adoption.”

More Hypocrisy on the Left

tolerance

Most reasonable people would think that school is no place to be showing gay “marriage” propaganda films.

So when the Education Minister bans the showing of the film “Gaby Baby” during school time, the usual suspects come out saying how this increases intolerance.

Really? The absence of a pro-gay film actually reduces people’s tendency to “live and let live” in regard to homosexual relationships? Can we expect a spike in gay-bashing next week because public schools aren’t allowed to show in class time one particular video this week?

Tolerance seems to be one of those code words that in an Orwellian fashion has been twisted to mean the opposite of its original meaning. It seems that it now means a compulsory celebration of something that one might disagree with but is not allowed to express opposition to.

What a strange and sad world we now live in.

It’s Spring Already!

img_7787

Spring generally comes early in Narrabri. Even though it’s “officially” still winter, many plants are getting right into the spring season of flowers and growth. It’s hard to believe that just a week ago I was rushing out to protect my frangipani trees from the late frosts.

Last night’s rain and the higher temperatures seem to have made every part of the garden come to life.

img_7791I forgot to plant sweetpeas this year. Well to be honest, I didn’t bother because last spring and summer were so disheartening for gardening. But the sweetpeas did not forget me! A couple of hardy plants are growing from last year’s seed.

img_7771

The conditions seemed to be particularly tough on stone fruit trees. I lost my beloved peach tree and one of two plum trees. This tree is starting to bud with the promise of leaves and blossom starting to unfurl.

A bottle brush has grown next to the church fence ever since we have been here. Because of its position, hidden behind the play area, I rarely even acknowledge its existence. Today it was magnificent.

And who doesn’t love annuals at this time of the year? I love petunias because they cope so well with our extremes of heat and cold. Sometimes they keep going into their second or third year. This year there seemed to be a shortage of petunias at the nursery but dianthus are a pretty good substitute!

I wasn’t thinking about photography at all this afternoon, but I was outside when I opened my eyes and saw what was all around me and the camera called.

Child of Lesbian Parents Opposes Gay “Marriage”

From the ABC:

Ask the Bigot: Who is Katy Faust and why is the daughter of lesbian parents against gay marriage?

She became a Christian in high school and was concerned by the plight of children.

She is in Canberra to lobby the Federal Government against gay marriage and she told Lateline why. (Click here to view video)

These are her key points:

1. She loves her lesbian mother and her partner:

“While my mother was a fantastic mother and most of what I do well as a mother myself I do because that’s how she parented me, she can’t be a father. Her partner, an incredible woman — both of these women have my heart — cannot be a father either.”

2. She says children of gay parents pressured into supporting them:

“There’s several children that have contacted me even since I started writing about this, saying ‘I agree with you, but I’ll never come out and speak about this publicly because my relationship with my parent is too tenuous’.”

3. When she became Christian she struggled with Bible’s teachings on sexuality:

“Because there’s a fierce protectiveness I think that all children have for their parents, but what I was delighted to find when I read Scripture is that God has an incredible heart for the orphan and that he’s very concerned with the plight of children.”

4. She says children should not have to fit into parents’ ‘lifestyles’:

“Children have rights … the onus needs to be on adults to conform to the rights of children rather than children fitting into an adult’s lifestyle. And certainly, I don’t think that homosexuals are responsible by any means for the crisis that we face in America when it comes to family structure these days. Absolutely, heterosexuals have led the way on that charge.”

5. Her blog was originally anonymous but she was outed by a gay blogger:

“I wouldn’t be having this interview with you today, because I never intended to be involved in the legal fight, but because I was outed in the name of love and tolerance, I am talking with you today.”

Ann Voskamp- An Honest Conversation About Abortion that Asks Us Not to Turn Away

Ann Voskamp writes powerfully about abortin and the changes needed in the attitude of the church to make life a more powerful option than death

When I get the message that Sozan wants an abortion, it feels like all the air got vacuumed out of my lungs.

But I get it.

I once sat in a doctor’s office and the atomic blast of my own pregnancy test ripped through me and I’m telling you, it was impossible to breathe through the shockwaves, the thermal heat.

I’ve sat with Sozan in Iraq, in the windowless, no-plumbing shipping container where, she, her husband, her children slept on the floor through the winter. I’d watched her rock her sick baby. I’d watched her eyes howl, heard the raw ache in her as she told me how ISIS began the blood bath genocide of her people.

One year ago this week.

Lyle Shelton honours the one man in Labor who stands for truth

From Lyle Shelton: “Our political class has fallen victim to a culture that has lost its capacity to reason.

How a decision to sit was the biggest stand for truth at Labor’s conference

Labor’s 47th National Conference in Melbourne at the weekend marked the party’s end of tolerance for the natural family as the gold standard for children.

It’s been a slow burn but it is now official. The party’s capitulation to the sexual revolution and Greens’ social policy is complete.

After 2019, any Labor parliamentarian who votes to support marriage as one man and one woman will be automatically expelled from the party.

There is now no room in the party for an aspiring candidate for office who wishes to uphold the definition of marriage that is in the best interest of a child.

As Labor’s president Mark Butler put the motion, the ‘ayes’ were loud and proud.

“All those against?” A solitary “no” which sounded like WA Senator Joe Bullock rang out. I was sitting up in the bleachers so it was hard to tell for sure.

Earlier as Penny Wong, Labor’s lesbian Senate leader, rose to speak she was greeted with a sustained standing ovation.

One man, the former head of the Australia’s largest trade union, Joe de Bruyn, could not bring himself to genuflect before the rainbow regime.

It takes courage not to go with the crowd. It takes even greater courage to do this when the crowd are the people of the party for whom you have given your life.

Someone with an iPhone snapped Joe and put him on Twitter. His decision not to bow was ridiculed with almost 200 re-tweets.

What the mockers will never understand is how much courage that took.

Earlier in the conference, Labor voted to make it their policy to support access to assisted reproductive technology for same-sex attracted people.

Watch now for Australia’s prohibition on commercial surrogacy to begin to be chipped at.

There was no debate about the ethics of denying children their natural mother or father, a necessary by-product of ART.

The irony of all this was hearing on the radio on the drive to work this morning the victims of the forced adoption practices of the 1950s-1970s telling heart-wrenching stories of removal.

Do we seriously think a boy growing up with lesbians will never have an ache in his heart for his dad?

I see how my kids love and relate to their mother. There is a maternal bond that two men cannot fulfil no matter how much the law tries to pretend otherwise.

The Greens and Labor talk a lot about the natural environment for birds and plants.  Labor’s conference said nothing about the natural environment for a baby.

And if you think I am being partisan, I am not. It is a Liberal, Warren Entsch, who is leading the charge to abolish husband and wife from the Marriage Act when Parliament resumes in August.

Our political class has fallen victim to a culture that has lost its capacity to reason.

Labor Leadership holds the rainbow flag

Yes, it is a sad day to see the alternative party of government vote to expel anyone who wants to support marriage as the best environment for a child.

But we must use this seminal moment in Australian politics to wake ourselves up and resolve to re-build a marriage culture.

Doing this will require speaking. It will require challenging the assumptions of our friends who have put a rainbow wash through their Facebook profile.

Ideas have consequences. If bad ideas are the only ones prosecuted in the public square, as was the case at Labor’s conference, then we should not be surprised if viral ideas take root in our culture.

Truth always resonates with ordinary people but it can only resonate if it is spoken.

By remaining in his seat, Joe de Bruyn stood for truth.

We all need to take a leaf out of his book.

Making a Light Box

I had a little fun this afternoon building myself a light box from some old corflute signs we had lying around.

A light box, for the uninitiated, is a box for taking photos of small objects. It has a white interior and one or more windows with a diffuser and a light source. This gives you the advantage of controlling the amount and direction of light falling on the object, assuring the colours are right and there are no shadows.

You can spend hundreds of dollars on a good light box, or you can make a mediocre one in under an hour at close to zero cost. There are lots of plans and instructions on the net. I used this plan, with some modification due to using a different sized sheet.

Here is the final set up:

img_7709

As you can see, it is simply a white box with  Fred Nile on the lid. The window is on the left side and on the outside there is a halogen floodlight as the light source. The diffuser in the window is high tech- two thicknesses of “Bake” paper. There seems to be a huge amount of light absorbed by the paper, so next time I will try just one thickness.

So here is one of my first attempts at photographing little Ted:

img_7705

Great photo, a pity about the colours! The background is supposed to be white!

The problem is the colour of the light which is not as white as the camera is expecting. I tried to correct it quickly in “Shotwell”, and I could have spent some time in Gimp getting it right, but much better to adjust the camera settings and get the light balance right from the start. I quickly downloaded the manual for my camera- after 8 years and nearly 8000 photos it’s probably time to read the instructions 🙂

The procedure for setting the white balance is very simple, once you find the right menu. I selected the “Tungsten” setting which gave me the correct white background, and here is my little friend in his true glory

img_7708

Easy peasy!

You might notice there is a gap where the back doesn’t quite meet the base. That’s because I just pushed the bits on to the table without taking much care with fitting them properly!

A bit of craft and a bit of photography, together with some mathematics (I had to adjust the measurements a little to fit my boards), a great way to spend a couple of hours when it’s too cold and windy to ride your bike.

Desperate Shorten Threatens Australian Economy

copper-crossing-solar-power-2-fw

I woke up to the news on the ABC this morning that Bill Shorten wants to take a proposal to the ALP National Conference that would make it policy to at a target of 50% renewable electricity by 2030.

It seems that Shorten is as thick as two short planks- not only is this likely not achievable, but it will drive the cost of power through the roof either through direct charges to consumers or through ever increasing Government subsidies.

The drama about changes to the Renewable Energy Target earlier this year was not driven by anti-renewable ideology as the media and the ALP portrayed it. It was basically about the fact that there was no way we could achieve the 20% by 2020 mandated by Kevin Rudd and consequently there would be massive penalties imposed on the electricity generators, driving up the price of power.

Here is the thing. Renewable energy, most likely in the form of solar will soon become economically viable. It is almost competitive with the cost of installing new coal powered generators, which is the only reason why AGL announced with great fanfare it would not be investing in any new coal-fired generators.

By the time we get to 2030 it is quite possible that new solar power stations will produce power so cheaply that existing coal powered stations will be closed down and replaced by power, simply by the laws of economics. The technology around both the generation and storage of power is going through such a revolution at the moment that it will make financial sense to invest without subsidies and targets imposed by Government.

Andrew Bolt’s take, complete with pretty pictures:

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten is set to unveil a bold climate policy goal requiring half of Australia’s large-scale energy production to be generated using renewable sources within 15 years.

This means more than doubling green power but without using more of the hydro electricity that so far produces most of it. (Labor won’t build more dams.):

image

That vast expansion of wind and solar will not happen without paying a fortune in subsidies and forcing consumers to use more green power, givenhow expensive it is:

image

This will potentially cost taxpayers and consumers billions more each year, when we already subsidise green power by around $3 billion a year.

Effect on global warming?Nil.

Effect on the economy? Business lost, jobs lost.

Government and Sport

What is it with politicians sponsoring sporting events at the expense of the tax payers?

If all of these people who are outraged about a $5000 helicopter trip actually looked at the big money being wasted by the millions to wealthy sporting organisations like Liverpool FC, the AFL, the  NRL, IOC and FIFA maybe we could start reducing taxes instead of trying to find ways of increasing them.

From Freedom Watch:

Big Government in bed with Big Soccer

Ball_in_net

Earlier this month I wrote on FreedomWatch about the absurdity of State and Territory governments subsidising AFL matches. Equally absurd is the government funding of friendly soccer matches involving the big European clubs currently touring Australia.

Real Madrid, AS Roma and Manchester City are currently playing in a pre-season tournament in Melbourne. Liverpool played Australian team Brisbane Roar on Friday night and Adelaide United last night. Manchester City played Melbourne City on Saturday night on the Gold Coast whilst Sydney FC played Chelsea in June and Tottenham in May.

According to the Australian Financial Review the Queensland and South Australian governments are understood to be paying Liverpool $10 million in appearance fees. Whilst the organisers of the tournament in Melbourne have received upwards of $8 million from the Victorian government.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews demonstrated the real reason why politicians are prepared to spend public cash on elite sport when he was front and centre at Real Madrid training on Friday. It is because elite sport is popular with voters.

As I wrote in The Spectator last year, governments pretty much always overstate the economic benefits of major sporting events when justifying spending their taxpayers’ hard-earned money. Indeed, Victorian Minister for Sport John Eren made the audacious claim that the series would generate between $50 million $80 million for the Victorian economy.

The reason these clubs are in Australia for glorified pre-season training (apart from picking up some free money from our governments) is to build their already enormous global fan bases. Liverpool claims to have almost 600 million fans worldwide. 10,000 people paid $15 each to watch Real Madrid train at the MCG last week.

Clearly, the organisers of these games don’t need government money to make them profitable, it’s just that it makes the undertaking a little bit more profitable, and a little less work. They have identified an opportunity to play state governments off against each other, and state governments have shamefully played ball.

If governments really think they can attract and hold major sporting events more efficiently than the private sector, they should introduce a voluntary major events tax whereby citizens can decide whether they want to contribute to what is essentially a luxury.

NSW father found guilty of procuring 12yo daughter as ‘child bride’ is sentenced to six years in jail

This is a good response to child abuse disguised as marriage and hidden under Islamic tradition.

From the ABC:

NSW father found guilty of procuring 12yo daughter as ‘child bride’ is sentenced to six years in jail

Updated 40 minutes ago

A New South Wales man who allowed his 12-year-old daughter to illegally marry in an Islamic ceremony has been sentenced to at least six years in jail.

The 63-year-old, who cannot be identified to protect the girl’s identity, was convicted in April of procuring his daughter for sex with a man, who was 26 at the time, and being an accessory.

Judge Deborah Sweeney said they were serious offences which cannot be excused by the man’s Islamic faith and the sentence needed to deter others from similar conduct.

The girl, now 13, was married to a 26-year-old man in a ceremony by a local sheikh at the family home in the Hunter Valley last year.

She miscarried after falling pregnant and the man she unlawfully married, now 27, has already been jailed for at least seven-and-a-half years.

Judge Sweeney said the man “failed in his duty as a father to protect his daughter”.

The court heard he viewed the marriage as a solution to the risk of his daughter committing sin and allowed the ceremony to go ahead, against the wishes of the child’s mother.

She described his actions as a breach of trust.

Judge Sweeney said he “lacks insight into his offending”.

She imposed a total sentence of eight years for both offences.

With time already served, the man, who has been an unemployed disability pensioner for the past 20 years, will first be eligible for parole in November 2020.
