Apostolic Summit 2014

Each year, about this time, we travel to Rockhampton for the annual Apostolic Summit, followed by the Sons’ Retreat.

This year the speakers were John Alley and Canadian Kenn Gill. This was Kenn’s second year at the Summit.

Kenn Gill

John used his sessions to talk about the end times and the need for pastors to teach clearly on this topic.

Kenn urged us to think and live apostolically, of which the first goal must be evangelism. We must find our “Jerusalem” and fill it- that is determine our immediate mission field and ensure that everyone is aware of the gospel.

I love the Summit for the energetic worship, meeting old friends and great teaching.

After the Summit we go to the coast where we spend a couple of days with other pastors. While there is some teaching there is more emphasis on sharing together and prayer.

Burmese pastors

A feature this year was the presence of quite a few pastors from Myanmar, Indonesia and Africa. Their experiences are very different to ours. Pastor Suum, whom we got to know over the time of the Retreat, shared how he was badly beaten and left to die because of his faith in Christ.

Overall it was a very tiring time, but so worthwhile. I always come away feeling physically drained but spiritually recharged.

Gail Wallace- Why the Gender Debate is “Catching Fire”

Some very insightful commentary here on women and spiritual warfare

catching-fire

I recently saw the movie Catching Fire (released last November), which is based on the second book in Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games¹ trilogy, and it sparked the idea for this post, which first appeared on the CBE Scroll.

For those not familiar with the story, here’s the plot of “Catching Fire” in a nutshell.

[Spoiler Alert] After winning the 74th Hunger Games (a competition in which “tributes” are forced to fight to the death), protagonist Katniss Everdeen returns to her home in the post-apocalyptic nation of Panem. Because her defiant actions in the arena have fueled a rebellion against the oppressive Capitol, President Snow forces the remaining tributes to return to the arena for another round of competition.

There are many powerful moments, but one scene in particular had implications for the gender debate taking place in conservative evangelical circles today. Before Katniss sets out, her coach gives her this advice: “When you are in the arena, you remember who the true enemy is”. As the deadly games proceed, it becomes obvious that the government wants to make sure none of the tributes return alive, and this advice makes all the difference in the final outcome.

Remember who the true enemy is.

As the debate about women’s roles is played out in the arenas of church and society today, many Christians seem set on characterizing the issue as a conflict between men and women.

Men are accused of selfishly holding onto their privilege and power at all costs, and women are accused of wanting an equal share of that power for power’s sake.  Some seem to think this is a zero sum game; meaning that men will lose something if they share their power with women, when in fact, both would gain.

Still others frame the issue as a conflict between Christians and secular society. The end result is often a barrage of “friendly-fire” with collateral damage to both sides.

Could it be that we’ve lost sight of who the true enemy is?

When we draw the lines of the battle so narrowly it’s easy to forget that there is another player in these “earthly games”, one whose role in the conflict is described in Genesis 3. After being cast out of heaven, Satan’s Plan B was to become the ruler over earth.  So he entices Adam and Eve into disobeying God, thinking this will give him some kind of sovereign power over them2.

But instead God’s response is this:  “…I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel” (Genesis 3:15b). It’s like God is saying “Don’t be too smug about your success here. From now on you will be the enemy of the woman and her offspring, and One will come from her who will crush your head”, a reference to the coming Christ.

Remember who the true enemy is.

Sometimes I think our preoccupation with the consequences of sin described for Eve (“your desire shall be for your husband, and he will rule over you”, Genesis 3:16b) causes us to underestimate the depth of Satan’s enmity towards women. Enmity means conflict. Enmity means anger and loathing and hatred.

We are naive when we fail to connect that enmity to the oppression of women that has taken place through the centuries and continues today.

As Paul reminds us, “our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12). Satan knows that one way to hold back the Church is to marginalize and oppress women.

It will take the joint efforts of both women and men (empowered by the Holy Spirit) to overcome the impact of Satan’s enmity.

I believe this is a spiritual battle, not a secondary or cultural issue. Indifference or apathy only gives Satan the upper hand.

Men must recognize who the real enemy is and actively advocate for women.

Women must recognize who the real enemy is and prepare for battle by “armoring up” to stand against the devil’s schemes (Ephesians 6:10-18).

And we all need to pray earnestly for gender reconciliation in the church and in the world.

Let’s not forget who the true enemy is.

Listening Prayer

EarOne of the keys to effective prayer is listening to God. If we pray according to His will not just what we think, then we will see marvellous answers to prayer.

People find it hard to listen to God. It does take practice and discipline, but Jesus said “My sheep hear my voice” so we should expect to be hearing the voice of the Lord often.

For listening prayer, we first ditch the prayer list. This is about communion with God, not shopping.

I find it helpful to have a journal so I can write things down. I also find it helpful to have a piece of paper to write down all the things that my brain comes up with in the silence- that way I can train myself to accept that those things that worry me will be dealt with.

I start by saying something like ,”Lord here I am ready to listen and to enjoy your presence.” Then I stop and sit still, allowing my mind to be quiet.

Sometimes I will bring some concerns to the Lord. I will write down my prayer, and what I hear as God’s response.

Other times I will come with no agenda at all. I have learned that the things I think about (other than the trivial things that I need to do something about) are often the things that the Holy Spirit is prompting me to pray about. This morning, for example, I found myself thinking about the Prime Minister so I spent some time praying for him and the Government. This is not something I do regularly but I believe God was wanting me to do that today.

The key to all this is to approach prayer as a conversation not a list of demands.

Perks of the Office

winner

Judging by most standards, being a pastor is a rotten job- long hours, little pay, lots of criticism by armchair experts.

Of course most pastors are not doing a job, but living out a God-given passion. That makes all the difference and greatly outweighs the negatives.

One of the huge privileges is the way people invite you into the deepest, most intimate parts of their lives, the hidden secret places.

Sometimes people share their struggles and shame, desperately hoping to find acceptance and forgiveness. What an honour it is to listen to the cry of their heart and to express the reality of God’s love to them.

Other times people come and share their great joys, just wanting to have someone celebrate with them. They might be in a place where the news cannot be made public yet- an award, a promotion, family news. What a joy it is to share their happiness and to be entrusted with their confidence.

There are many parts of my life that I love, and some that I find challenging. The real excitement comes in sharing those special moments with special people.

Listening

Ear

Most mornings I get up early and spend an hour or so in prayer. Sometimes I am just too physically tired, but 90% of the time I do this.

This morning I deliberately chose to put my prayer list aside, and spend time just listening to the “still small voice.” I realised that it’s been a while since I’ve done this, despite regularly encouraging my congregation to do it. It is just too easy to get into a prayer rut where we fill up the silence with the things we want God to address- it’s certainly easier than listening to God’s list that He wants us to correct!

During this time this thought came to me: “The reason so few hear God is that we do not listen to Him.”

It takes time, physically doing nothing but listen. We are perennially busy occupied with how best to fill our hours. Sitting and waiting for God to speak seems so wasteful.

And what if God doesn’t actually say anything?

More frightening, what if God does say something? Who can stand before the voice of the Lord?

This morning, God just told me that He loves me and enjoys what I do for Him and with Him.

That certainly lifted my spirits! It put a spring in my step and a joy in my heart.

Egypt- Every Friday is a Day of Death for Christians

From persecution.org

“Every Friday is a Day of Death” for Christians in Cairo

The situation in Egypt continues to deteriorate for the nation’s Christians. As systematic kidnappings of Christians plagues the Minia region to its south, reports confirm the brutal murder of a Christian woman by Muslim Brotherhood radicals in Cairo. Viciously stabbed to death, Mary Sameh George was murdered for hanging a cross from her review mirror. The mob responsible for her death set fire to Mary’s car shortly after taking her life, sending a message of repression and violence to Christians local to Ain Shams.

04/22/2014 Egypt (GlobalDispatch) – A shocking new report details an Islamic mob of Muslim Brotherhood supporters in Egypt attacking and murdering a Christian woman for having a cross hanging on her car mirror. The report on Monday chronciles eyewitness account of the beating, stabbing, and shooting death of Mary Sameh George in Cairo on Martch 28.

“Every Friday the supporters of Muslim Brotherhood organize a march after Friday prayer in Ain Shams,” the witness told the International Christian Concern (ICC). Identified only as Wahid, he says that “On this Friday afternoon, violent clashes took place between the supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood and the security forces during their march.”

Mary, in her mid-20s, was parked near the Virgin Mary and Archangel Michael Coptic Orthodox Church to deliver medicine and food to the elderly after work that day. The protesters headed towards this church after the clash and attacked Mary when they saw her cross hanging from the rear view mirror of her car.

Wahid says the mob jumped on the car, collapsing the roof, and then dragged her from the vehicle, beating and stabbing her repeatedly. “They were chanting ‘Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar’ and cursing her while stabbing her,” Wahid said. “Then one of them shot her in the back and that led to her death. After killing her they set her car on fire.”

Chuck Pierce Prophesies ‘Dragons Are On the Move’

This article was on Charisma this morning. Parts of this prophecy particularly resonate with me about the Spirit going deeper than before.

Chuck Pierce
Chuck Pierce

Chuck Pierce released this prophetic wordearlier this month:

“This is not the same as you’ve seen in the past. This is not the same as what you’ve asked for in other seasons. This is a different glory—a glory change that I’m bringing into the land! You will shudder at the changes that are on the way in your land and in other lands and with other people!

“For this is a time that the blood that runs deep will now be sanctified. This is a time that My Spirit will go deeper than I have gone in the past. For this is a time of birthing what is new, but yet bringing forth that which is old, and treasures will erupt! Treasures will erupt! Treasures will erupt!

“I will bring forth what has not been seen, and I will cause your gifts to come alive in ways they’ve never come alive. You will feel the shuddering birthing pains within you, and from that you will bring to birth the change that is necessary for you to enter into this season.

“So know this: Dragons are on the move, and even the Great Dragon is now mounting up. Nations that will align are now aligning. So watch carefully and look deep into the circumstances around you. For these are days of great change.

“Watch the signs on your road for your road is now changing. New opportunities are coming. Watch now, for I will realign your path!”

Here’s Why We’re Not Seeing Miraculous Healings in America

healing power
Why isn’t there more healing in the Western world? (Lightstock)

With all the traveling I do these days with Impact Nations, I get asked a lot of questions about a lot of issues. However, there is one question that I am asked more often—by far—than any other. In fact, in the past two weeks, I have been asked it in England, New Jersey and Canada: “Why don’t we see the same kind of healing here (in England, the U.S., Canada) as you do in Africa and India?”

I usually respond to this in several ways. First of all, I do see God heal in the same way in the West as in the developing world. I have watched in North America, Europe and Australia as deaf ears were opened, cataracts dissolved, cancer instantly disappeared (verified by doctors), and paralysis and pain have gone. In my living room, the Lord healed a woman who had been totally blind in one eye for 20 years. He is the same God in Canada as Kenya, in the U.S. as Uganda, in England as India.

Although I have seen the Lord open the ears of nine deaf people—one after another—in North America, in fairness, I would say that although the quality of healing that I see is the same everywhere, the quantity seems higher in the developing world. However, I need to clarify this statement. It is not that I see more people not being healed when prayed for; it seems to me there are fewer people looking to be healed in the West. (To clarify once again, I am not saying the people on the streets of our cities do not want to be healed; it is just that they are not being asked and therefore do not think of healing as an option in their lives.)

This leads to what may be the biggest single issue: expectation. Jesus always looked for faith in people. This is why He sometimes asked, “Do you want to get well?” or “What do you want?” Jesus expected people to be healed, and they in turn expected the same thing.

When I am asked “the question,” I usually answer with a question of my own: “Do you expect people to be healed?” One of the ways we can discover how we really feel about this question is to examine how often we step out and ask others if we may pray for their healing.

After all, more people are healed if we pray for them than if we don’t. In many cases, we simply don’t have a real expectation that God will move, so we stay in the safe zone of keeping quiet when presented with the opportunity to pray for healing.

One of the reasons I take people from the Western world to the developing world to do the gospel is to change their expectations. Again and again I watch as they discover a whole new level of truth about the power and compassion of Jesus and of who they really are because they live in Christ. How can anyone experience being used by the Lord to heal the sick day after day on a Journey of Compassion and then go home unchanged? Back home, as these men and women continue to pray and expect, God continues to heal.

Recently, I was with a church in Patterson, N.J. After teaching them about the reality and immediacy of the kingdom, we went downtown to pray for the sick and hurting.

Understandably, they went out on this first experience with some nervousness, but even greater was their desire to see the kingdom tangibly come. In an hour, they prayed for more than 70 people. One of these was a woman who was hobbling on the sidewalk. I say hobbling because she really was hardly moving with almost all her weight on her cane.

It turns out that she had suffered two strokes in the past two years. She was in significant pain and was struggling with profound paralysis. After a short prayer, she remarked that she felt significantly better. Another short prayer and this woman stood up straight, picked up her cane and walked freely up the street.

He is the same God in Canada as Kenya, in the U.S. as Uganda, in England as India.

And so is His kingdom, where it seems that what you expect is what you will receive.

Ray Ortlund- What is Marriage, According to the Bible?

What is marriage, according to the Bible?

paradise_lost_21

Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.  Genesis 2:24

It is not true that the Bible teaches multiple views of marriage, and therefore the Bible’s clarity is diminished on this question.  The Bible does record, for example, that “Lamech took two wives” (Genesis 4:19).  But the Bible is not thereby endorsing polygamy, but indeed is casting doubt on polygamy.  The role of Lamech in the text is to show “a progressive hardening in sin” (Waltke, Genesis, page 100).  We invented polygamy, along with other social evils.  But God gave us marriage.

The Bible defines marriage in Genesis 2:24, quoted above.  Here is what this very significant verse is saying:

Therefore.  This word signals that Moses is adding an aside to his narrative.  It’s as if we are sitting in Moses’ living room, watching his DVD of the creation of the universe (Genesis 1) and of man and woman (Genesis 2).  At this point he hits the pause button on the remote, the screen freezes, he turns to us post-fall people watching these amazing events and he says, “Now let me explain how what God did so long ago is normative for us today.  Amazingly, we still retain something beautiful from the Garden of Eden.”

A man shall leave his father and his mother.  In a culture of strong bonds between the generations, this is striking.  A man’s primary human relationship is no longer with his parents or ancestors.  He breaks away from them for the sake of a more profound loyalty.

And hold fast to his wife.  A man, in marrying, enfolds his wife into his heart.  He rejoices to identify with her: “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh” (verse 23).  At every level of his being, he becomes wholeheartedly devoted to her, as to no other.

And they shall become one flesh.  “One flesh” is essential to the biblical view of marriage.  It means, one mortal life fully shared.  Two selfish me’s start learning to think like one unified us, sharing one everything: one life, one reputation, one bed, one suffering, one budget, one family, one mission, and so forth.  No barriers.  No hiding.  No aloofness.  Now total openness with total sharing and total solidarity, until death parts them.  Moreover, Jesus explained that, behind the word “become,” God is there: “What therefore God has joined together . . .” (Matthew 19:6).  Marriage is not a product of human social evolution.  Marriage came down from God.  And he defined it for us.  He has the right to.  It belongs to him.

One mortal life fully shared between a man and a woman — this is marriage, according to the Bible, because Genesis 2:24 is not a throw-away line.  Its very purpose is to define.

What’s more, the apostle Paul quoted Genesis 2:24 to take our understanding a step further — an amazing step: “We are members of [Christ’s] body.  ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’” (Ephesians 5:30-31).  Did you notice his logic?  “We are members of Christ’s body.  He loved us.  He chose us.  He gave himself up for us.  He embraced us.  He is with us.  He will present us someday in splendor.  All of this glory is ours, because we are united with him now and forever.  Therefore, this is why, our union with Christ is the reason why, a man and women get married and live united as ‘one flesh.’  Human marriages are miniature social platforms on which the gospel is to be displayed.”

Marriage is a gospel issue.  That is the ultimate reason why clarity about its definition matters.  People who depart from, or fail to stand up for, the biblical view of marriage are taking a step away from the gospel itself.  The whole Bible is the story of the marital love of God, as I demonstrate in this book.  Our whole lives are that story, if we have eyes to see.

Marriage is more than human romance, wonderful as that is.  Marriage is the display of Christ and his Bride in love together.  A beautiful, tender, thriving, Ephesians 5-kind of marriage makes the gospel visible on earth, bringing hope to people who have given up believing there could be any love anywhere for them.  That is why biblical marriage deserves our courageous loyalty today.  And that is why, in our increasingly secular times, biblical marriage is under pressure.  Its true meaning is understood and embodied and sustained only by the power of the gospel.

We can’t turn the clock back to the days of the Christian social consensus the West has foolishly thrown away.  But we who say we believe the gospel can and must stand up for the biblical definition of marriage.  We must cultivate beautiful marriages ourselves.  We must suffer social rejection bravely.  We must pray for revival.  We must wait for the inevitable collapse of every false view of marriage.  We must lovingly serve all who suffer for their foolish attempts at false “marriages.”  And we must go to church this Sunday and worship the living God with all our hearts, so that we ourselves are sustained for faithfulness over the long haul, because this isn’t going to be easy.

5 Ways That Praying in Tongues Will Change Your Life Forever by LARRY SPARKS

5 Ways That Praying in Tongues Will Change Your Life Forever

One of the most controversial and, sadly, most misunderstood gifts of the Holy Spirit is praying in tongues. I am convinced that there is so much antagonism aimed at this gift because of the incredible power it releases into our lives. In the same way that many reject the prophetic ministry because of abuses, misuses and bad experiences, the same approach has been taken—perhaps in greater extremes—toward praying in tongues.
Tongues Is a Controversial Subject That Requires Our Attention
At the end of the day, we need to be honest with ourselves and honest with the biblical text. This unique gift of the Holy Spirit actually announced the birth of Christianity on the Day of Pentecost. It was highly prized by the man who wrote the majority of the New Testament (Paul). It equips believers to communicate with God on a unique level and empowers us to effectively live the supernatural life. In short, it would make a lot of sense that the enemy would tirelessly fight against something that has such strong potential to pillage his expansion of darkness in our lives and on the earth.
Corey Russell, a senior leader at the International House of Prayer in Kansas City, wrote the book and curriculum The Glory Within not simply as a teaching on the subject of tongues, but as a summons to experience the power of a Person—the Holy Spirit. In the past, many books and teachings have emphasized tongues in almost a robotic way. What was intended to be a source of supernatural power and a catalyst for deep intimacy with God has been reduced to a mere theological position in many charismatic churches.
