Scripture

All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit gave them the ability.

Observation

On the Day of Pentecost, the disciples are together in the one place when the Holy Spirit comes with a noise like a violent wind and the sight of flames like tongues. The Holy Spirit fills all of them and they begin to speak in tongues.

At the commotion, people from around rush to see what is happening. They are amazed to hear these uneducated Galileans praising God in various languages. They are amazed, but some of them sneer saying, “They are drunk.”

Peter stands up and preaches, showing how this is the promise of the Spirit prophesied by Joel.

Application

The Holy Spirit is power- the mighty rushing wind that disrupts our comfortable existence.

The Holy Spirit is fire- burning away the sin and vain lifestyles of sinful people.

The Holy Spirit is language- prayer language bringing us into the throne room of the Father.

The Holy Spirit is confidence to preach with conviction and power to bring people to salvation.

Prayer

Come Holy Spirit. Come and fill me so that every action, every word, every minute speaks of the glory of Jesus. Amen.

The Earth is Dying/ Died 40 years ago/ or something

The usual predictable dire warning that surround Earth Day have been somewhat overshadowed by the celebrations of the Queen’s 90th Birthday. Stupid humans we are too busy living to notice we are supposed to be dead.

Here are some of the predictions made at the time of the first Earth Day in 1970- and this was even before they invented Global Warming.

Freedom of Speech on the Internet

Last week John Dickson, a prominent Christian commentator, reported that a post of his had been removed from Facebook. He had written a respectful commentary on the push for same sex marriage and someone had complained. After Dickson protested to Facebook the post was restored.

Other Christian commentators have also noted from time to time that their posts mysteriously disappear from Facebook, especially when they write something contrary to the “establishment position” on sexuality issues.

Facebook is a private company and so they can regulate the contents of their web-site any way they like. They can delete posts they don’t agree with and promote ideas that they like.

It is ironic that destructive media such as porn can publish almost any vile or perverted thing with impunity, but those who call for traditional values on sexuality often find their appeals stifled by providers.

Here is the good news- you don’t have to be on facebook. Many platforms for promoting ideas exist outside of facebook and are not censored. Some of them require some work to get up and running.

Blogs are great. A blog is simply a collection of articles produced by one person or group over a period of time. This article is written on a blog. Most browsers allow you to subscribe to various blogs (sometimes via extensions to the browser). You read the content you want uncensored by any corporation. This wikipedia article on blogs is very interesting.

A blog (or RSS feed) usually has this symbol on it. Some browsers  show the symbol in the URL bar. Subscribe to the blog and you can automatically receive articles as they are posted to it.

If you use a variety of devices, and want to read blogs in more than one place, then an aggregation service might be the thing for you. I use feedly.com. Rather than subscribing to each blog on every computer, phone or tablet you own, you just log in to feedly and enter your blog details there. The nice thing is that feedly has an app for mobile devices, and many desktop and laptop web browsers have extensions that will notify you of new posts and allow you to look at a summary list without going to the feedly page.

If you want to produce your own blog, there are many providers who will let you set up your own blog for free. WordPress.com and blogger.com are the best known of these, but there are thousands of them. In a matter of minutes you can set up your own blog and be publishing your ideas to the world. Often these free services put ads on the bottom of your posts and offer a premium service where for a small fee you can have the ads removed. If you want your thoughts to be posted on other social media sites, most have buttons that allow you to link to facebook etc.

The other under-recognised social media platform is Google Plus. Whereas Facebook is where you link up with friends and acquaintances, G+ is a place where you can quickly meet up with a huge community of people who share the same interests you have- the friends you would like to have in real life. I find that generally people are more positive, respectful and have more useful things to say on G+ than on FB. Google have done a great job in fostering communities of interest and in allowing people to control who they share with than facebook.  As far as I know there has not been the kind of censoring that takes place on facebook.

I am finding that, after a number of years on social media, I am tending more to turn to the blog if I have something substantial to say, Google Plus for short comments or specific interests and less involvement on facebook except for local, family and church-related things.

So even though it feels like facebook is universal and everyone is on it, there are other media for communication.

Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant, Jimmy Page to face Stairway to Heaven copyright trial

Updated about an hour ago

Led Zeppelin’s lead singer Robert Plant and guitarist Jimmy Page will face a US jury trial next month over whether they stole the opening chords for their 1971 hit Stairway to Heaven.

District Judge Gary Klausner ruled that Stairway and the 1967 instrumental Taurus by the band Spirit, were similar enough to let a jury decide whether Plant and Page were liable for copyright infringement.

A trial is scheduled for May 10.

The lawsuit was brought by Michael Skidmore, a trustee for the late Randy Wolfe, also known as Randy California, who was Spirit’s guitarist and the composer of Taurus.

Mr Skidmore said Page might have been inspired to write Stairway for Led Zeppelin after hearing Spirit perform Taurus while the bands toured together in 1968 and 1969, but that Wolfe never got credit.

The defendants said Wolfe was a songwriter-for-hire who had no copyright claim, and that the chord progressions were so cliched that they did not deserve copyright protection.

But the judge said a jury could find “substantial” similarity between the first two minutes of “Stairway” and “Taurus,” which he called “arguably the most recognizable and important segments” of the songs.

“While it is true that a descending chromatic four-chord progression is a common convention that abounds in the music industry, the similarities here transcend this core structure,” Mr Klausner wrote.

“What remains is a subjective assessment of the ‘concept and feel’ of two works … a task no more suitable for a judge than for a jury.”

Mr Klausner dismissed claims against Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones and Warner Music Group Corp.

He also said the trustee could get only 50 per cent of any damages awarded, citing a 1967 contract that Wolfe signed.

“This case, from our perspective, has always been about giving credit where credit was due, and now we get to right that wrong,” said Francis Malofiy, a lawyer for Mr Skidmore.

A lawyer for the defendants did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

According to the complaint, Wolfe complained about the similarities of the songs in an interview shortly before he drowned in 1997 in the Pacific Ocean while attempting to rescue his son.

Stairway to Heaven is a track on Led Zeppelin’s untitled fourth studio album, often referred to as Led Zeppelin IV.

Reflection on 2 Corinthians 3:12-18

praise

Scripture

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

Observation

Moses veiled his face to hide the end of the glory what would later be set aside in the new covenant.

The minds of the Israelites were hardened and indeed still are. Only Jesus can remove the veil that is now over their minds.

When a person turns to the Lord, the veil is lifted. The Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom. Now we see His glory with unveiled faces, and we are being transformed from glory to glory in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Application

Religion blinds us with veils, and binds us with rules that restrict behaviour but do nothing to change the heart.

Jesus comes and takes the veil away. Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom. This is not freedom to sin, but freedom to carry the glory of Christ, and to grow in His glory as we look towards Him.

As I focus on His glory, the lure of sin seems less attractive, and I find myself choosing righteousness rather than sin.

Prayer

Lord help me to look upon you with an unveiled face. Today I choose your glory and your freedom. Amen.

The True Meaning of the Church by Ralph Neighbour

An excellent article by Ralph Neighbour about the true nature of the church
coaches_ralphNThe True Meaning of the Church

by Ralph Neighbour

When the average Christian hears the word “church” the immediate mental image is either a building or a large room in a religious structure with a platform and a preacher. Example: people say, “Are you going to church today?” This is a typical illegitimate use of the word. The question refers either to the building or the public gathering conducted there.

“Church” is not a Bible word. It comes from the German Kirk, defining a religious edifice. It is a bastard term birthed in the fourth century to define religious structures. Adolf Schlatter (1852–1938), Evangelical theologian and professor at Greifswald, Berlin and Tübingen, refused to use the term in any of his books, substituting “Community” for the word.

Jesus introduced the word ecclesia in Matthew 16 and then in chapter 18, used it for the second and last time. In the first reference, He described its mission: kicking down the gates of hell. In the second reference, he instructs how an ecclesia would deal with disputes between its members. Two members should settle issues together or invite a trusted third person into the negotiation. If that were to fail, it was to be presented to the ecclesia as the Supreme Court for a decision. The term ecclesia must refer to a community small enough for close fellowship to exist between all members.

That is why Christ’s body should be viewed “Cell” by “Cell.” Each is a basic Christian community where the intimacy Jesus described is present.

I had not earlier in my ministry grasped the size of “church” Jesus had in mind! How large could the gathering be Jesus used in Matthew to refer to ecclesia? It was obviously small enough for each member to be intimately connected with two persons in conflict.

I began to see that the 12 disciples were actually the prototype size for Jesus’ ecclesia. Twelve is approximately the number of people who can relate intimately to one another.
“Cell” defines the “Basic Christian Community,” the ecclesia, not the word “church.”

Jesus taught the ecclesia to “love (agape) one another.” 52 more times in the New Testament, we are called to consider how to connect to “one another.” The expression of dismembered body parts, sitting in rows, is described by the word “church.” The authentic “one another” life is found in the “cell.” The first word is cold, impersonal. The second word denotes what Paul called for in Philippians 2: “Look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.”

The biblical description of life together in the ecclesia demands an intimate family of God, not an impersonal assembly of God. The destruction done to the authentic ecclesia by the use of the word “church” to describe it is massive! Let us join Schlatter and refuse to use it!

Reflection on 1 Corinthians 13:1-13

1corinthians13_13

Scripture
And now faith, hope and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.

Observation
I can speak in tongues and prophesy or give all my possessions away. But without love these seemingly godly things are useless.

Love always looks to the other, being patient, kind and bearing all things.

Love is eternal. Prophecies and knowledge will come to an end. Just three things will last- faith, hope and love. Of these the greatest is love.

Application
Everything I do must be done from a place of love for God and love for my neighbour.

Many deeds in the christian life can be done for the glory of the doer. Only those done in love will last.

Paul tells us we can do supernatural or spiritual things such as prophecy, or have faith to move mountains. Unless our hearts are centred on God these things become worthless. So all of our worship, all of our programs, all our work- it’s all without value unless genuine love is at the centre of it.

Prayer
Lord please help me to love you and my neighbours more and more. Amen.
