Reflection on Romans 8:14-17

Scripture
His Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God's children.

Observation
we can tend towards believing that the gift of the Holy Spirit is just about supernatural power. But in fact the Holy Spirit does many thing in us which seem ordinary and, to the carnal mind, even boring.

1. The Spirit leads us- showing us how to live as God's children.

2. He gives us a spirit of adoption- that is, the Holy Spirit changes our hearts so that we are able to relate to God as Father.

3. The Spirit reassures us of our place in God's family

4. The Spirit makes us willing to share in Christ's glory and therefore in His suffering,

Application
We need to welcome the Spirit of God daily into our lives. The Spirit comes with both Pentecostal fire- the power to bring God's grace into the world- and also quiet transforming grace which renews the minds and hearts of believers.

These two sides of the same coin are inseparable. We need the gifts of the Spirit (tongues, prophecy, healing etc.) and the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace etc.) in equal measure.

Prayer
Holy Spirit come and fill me. Change my heart and make me like Jesus. Amen.
