Reflection on Genesis 2:15-17, 3:1-7

Scripture
When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye and also desirable for getting wisdom she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband who was with her and he ate it.

Observation
A whole world at their feet and just one rule- don't eat of the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

The serpent first questions God's authority to make the rule and then undermines His goodness.

Adam and Eve look at the fruit and their desire for it overcomes the warning that God had given. They eat and their eyes are opened.

Application
At the heart of every temptation are two tactics from the Devil

* Did God really say?- planting doubts about the commandments and the right of God to make them.

* Doubt about God's goodness and love

Also at the heart of every temptation are three desires:

* the fleshly desires

* the desires of what we see

* the ambitions of our heart

When we fix in our hearts that God is in control and that He is good then temptations become easier to resist and holiness a more attainable goal.

Prayer
At times Lord the battle with sin seems relentless. Please give me the confidence in you and the strength of will to follow your ways in all things. Amen.
