Scripture
The Lord said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives and your father's family and go to the land that I will show you.”
Observation
The Lord calls Abram to leave Haran and go to the land that the Lord will show him. It's possible that his father, Terah, had had a similar sort of calling as they had left Ur to travel to Canaan but had never quite got there.
The Lord promises great blessings to Abram and so he leaves Haran with Lot- which seems to be a point of disobedience and certainly causes problems later on.
Abram is 75 years old when he leaves home for his journey into the world
Application
Moving is always difficult and moving to a foreign land must have seemed a very daunting prospect at the age of 75.
Yet Abram moves, convinced that there is a blessing in return or a step of faithful obedience. The blessings prove to be far greater than Abram could possibly have imagined reaching through thousands of years and to the furthest parts of the world.
Prayer
Lord, what are you calling me to do today? Help me to see the blessing as well as the cost so that I can walk in joyful obedience with you. Amen.

In a dream recently someone said 'Never let a cross get in the way of a blessing' I've not been sure what that meant and if it was a good or bad response to the situation. Maybe it is sort of like that in this passage?

Could be- if the cross is referring to something that seems too hard to let go of and prevents us from moving in God's way. I notice it's a cross not the cross

Yes, 'a' cross. If it was 'the' I would think it unwise advice – 'a' suggests something seemingly difficult to let go of – or go through…on the way to blessing..
