Scripture
Suddenly their eyes were opened and they recognised him.
Observation
Two of Jesus' disciples are walking on the road to Emmaus. Jesus comes and joins them as they walk but they don't recognise him.
They tell Jesus all about what has happened right up to the reports of the resurrection. Jesus begins to explain to them the Scriptures concerning himself.
The disciples arrive at their destination and they beg Jesus to stay with them. As thy are having dinner Jesus takes the bread and breaks it. It is then that they recognise Him.
Application
Sometimes we can see things but not understand them, especially spiritual things.
These discipled had seen the life and death of Jesus and heard re[ports of his resurrection. They talks for hours with Jesus. Still they did not see him.
The breaking of bread here is an allusion to Holy Communion. It is by breaking bread in the community of faith that we recognise who Jesus is.
Community or walking together by itself will not do it. Nor will excellent Scripture teaching, or even direct words from the Lord. We must have regular communal worship together with these other things.
Prayer
Lord open my eyes to see you. Amen.
Amen!
