Reflection on Matthew 22:34-46

Scripture
No one could answer him. And after that no one dared ask him any more questions.

Observation
the Pharisees decide to trap Jesus with a religious question- what is the greatest commandment?

Jesus replies that the commandment to love God and to love one another sum up all the law and the demands of the prophets.

He then lobs a theological question back at them- whose son is the Messiah?

The Pharisees quickly respond that the Messiah is David's son. Jesus points out that David calls the Messiah “my Lord”, suggesting that he couldn't be David's son.

Application
Jesus here shows that any theological system that exalts doctrine and knowledge at the expense of love is flawed. The Pharisees had all the easy answers, but because they failed the love test, their answers were irrelevant and wrong.

Christians can be guilty of this also. We can have all the answers and all our theology sorted, but Jesus blows it away with a question and love.

I am not saying theology is bad or wrong in itself. Far from it. But theology should never become a substitute for real love of God and our neighbour.

Prayer
Today Lord, may I be like Jesus in my worship of you and in my love for others. Amen.
