Reflection on 2 Samuel 7:1-17

Scripture
Nathan replied to the king, “Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for the Lord is with you.”

Observation
David is troubled by the fact that he is living in a fine palace but there is no place fo rthe ark of God. Initially Nathan the prophet tells David to go ahead.

That night the Lord corrects Nathan. The Lord tells Nathan that He has never demanded or even expected a house. It is the Lord who provided a dwelling place for Israel. Further, he is going to provide a house for David- a dynasty that will last for ever.

David's son will build a house for the Lord and the Lord will be a father to him.

Application
Nathan assumed that because David was a godly man that God's favour would remain with him. But God corrected this false assumption. Although David's motivation was good, it was not to hum to fulfil this particular task.

The Lord speaks to Nathan to correct, but He does not rebuke. Many times we are afraid to step out in faith for fear of getting it wrong.

If my relationship with the Lord is strong and I am open to the Holy Spirit there is nothing to fear from making a mistake.

In this case, the Lord uses David and Nathan's enthusiasm as an opportunity to promise more blessing. If we are genuinely wanting to serve God in an attitude of thankfulness, He will turn every misstep into a blessing.

Prayer
Mighty God, how wonderful you are! Help me to discern your will for me today and to know your direction in every step I take. Amen.
