Reflection on 1 Corinthians 8:1-13

Scripture
But the man who loves God is known by God.

Observation
Paul discusses the issue of eating meat offered to idols. He starts by saying that we need to be careful of knowledge because it can lead to pride.

He goes on then to say that it an idol is nothing- there is no god but the one true God. There is just one Saviour the Lord Jesus Christ,

But people who are weak in their faith give some power to idols because they still believe in the gods they represent. For them, to eat meat offered to idols would be wrong.

We are free to eat this meat but we need to make sure that our freedom does not lead others away from the Lord.

Application
There are many shades of grey in our modern world where christians come to different conclusions because the Bible does not give explicit instructions.

For one person eating food marked as Halal (suitable for Muslins to eat) raises issues f conscience but for another this is not an issue. For some Harry Potter books are the height of satanism but other christians see a fantasy story that speaks of the gospel.

Christians have a responsibility to hear the fears of those who are weak in their faith. If my behaviour causes another person to doubt, my freedom has become sin.

Prayer
Lord help me to be sensitive to those who are weaker in faith and who see my actions differently to me. Amen.
