Reflection on Mark 1:9-15

Scripture
the Spirit then compelled Jesus to go into the wilderness where he was tempted by satan for forty days. He was out among the wild animals and angels took care of him.

Observation
Jesus travels from Nazareth to the Jordan to be baptised by John. As he emerges from the water, the Holy Spirit comes down on him and the Father speaks from heaven, “You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great pleasure.”

The Spirit drives Jesus into the wilderness where he faces privation and temptation.

Application
We don't like discomfort or suffering in and form, and it is our natural tendency to ascribe such things to the devil.

Immediately after the affirmation of his baptism, Jesus is driven into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit.

Here, in the place of lack, Jesus fights satan. But, we are told, angels ministered to Him.

When we allow ourselves to be led by the Holy Spirit, we find that in the midst of great testing there is unusual blessing.

If you want to see angels, be prepared to give up every god thing to follow the will of God.

Prayer
Father, I find it hard to find joy in times of difficulty and testing. I know Lord that in times of testing I can hear you more than in times of comfort. Please help me to welcome both at your hand and to rejoice in every circumstance. Amen.

  1. I think in the midst of testing we find it easy to lose sight of what God is trying to do in us. We are too busy feeling the pain of the fire to notice that it is refining us so that, as you say, we may reign with Him.
