Reflection on John 2:13-22

Scripture
Jesus replied, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.”

Observation
Jesus goes to the temple where he makes a whip and clears out all the paraphernalia of temple trade- the cattle and sheep, money-changers and merchants.

The Jewish leaders demand a miracle to prove Jesus' authority to do this. Jesus replies cryptically ,Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it.”

Later the disciples would recall this as a prophecy about his death and resurrection.

Application
Faith and commerce can be a deadly combination.

The temple trade started as a means of helping worshippers to purchase animals for sacrifice. But it took on a life of its own until greed became the dominant motive.

We can point the finger at modern day preachers, authors and performers who seem to do well out of serving the Lord.

But I need to question my own motives. Do I worship god in order to get something back? Are my prayers more about me than about the glory of God?

Prayer
Please help me Father to keep a pure heart before you. Amen.

  1. Amen, God sees the heart. He sees the desire and knows the motive of the heart. and God takes our motives many times above our actions.
