Scripture
These are written that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.
Observation
Sunday evening of Resurrection Day, the disciples are meeting behind locked doors from fear of the authorities. Suddenly Jesus appears before them. He greets them, showing the wounds in his hands and side. He commissions them to go and then breathes the Holy Spirit into them.
Thomas misses this meeting and s unable to believe the reports of the others. A week later the disciples come together again and Jesus once again appears to them. Thomas sees and believes.
The disciples saw Jesus do many miraculous signs but John gave his gospel record to encourage us to keep walking in Jesus.
Application
Thomas is characterised as a doubter and seems to embody the modern maim, “Seeing is believing.” In reality, how many of us have needed some sign that the resurrection is real and the gospel is true? How many of us first took the gospel at face value because someone told us?
It's natural to want some kind of tangible proof when we first encounter God. The walk of faith means that along the way we need to trust more and “see” less. This is especially true n terms of our life choices and the way in which we live.
We all need to learn to discern the voice of the Holy Spirit and allow faith rather than sight to determine our walk.
Prayer
Today Lord please speak to me and teach me how to hear your voice. Amen.
