Scripture
Stephen knelt down and shouted, “Lord don't blame them for what they have done.” Then he died.
Observation
Mostly Stephen is famous for being the first martyr, but he was also a fearless preacher and defender of the christian faith.
In this chapter, he is called before the Council on false charges. He speak boldly, showing how from the tine of Moses the people of Israel had resisted God's purposes.
The Council members are infuriated and decide to stone him. But Stephen is given a vision of the glory of God and Jesus. Finally Stephen dies just after he asks God to forgive his persecutors.
Application
Christians are not to seek out persecution but when it arises we are not to fear it.
All through history, christians have reported the most awesome experiences of the power of the presence of God while suffering the most awful of suffering.
It appears that western societies are becoming increasingly hostile to the faith. It is likely that christians may soon be imprisoned or even killed because of their beliefs.
We are not to fear such a prospect. When the time comes the Holy spirit will give us the grace to withstand the opposition.
Prayer
Lord I confess that I don't like to think about suffering for you. I pray that should that time come then I will be faithful, even victorious, through that test. Amen.
A big Amen!!
